Introduction

Although calibration and maintenance of site instrumentation is vital if production output is to remain within given quality parameters, with the pressure of production targets, it can sometimes slip down the agenda.

Often, the most cost-effective solution is to outsource instrument service, repair and traceable calibration to an ISO9001 accredited supplier such as Denca Controls, who uses UKAS certified calibration equipment.

Problem

Guinness Packaging needs to calibrate, service and repair all their production instrumentation on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that their product remains uncontaminated and to the specified standard.

The instrument calibration and service work is carried out at strictly regular intervals, but the period of time required to complete the necessary work is relatively brief.

The repair work is sporadic but, to minimise downtime, it is nevertheless necessary to have a qualified engineer available on a 24 hour breakdown support basis.

Solution

Guinness Packaging could employ an in-house engineer to carry out the instrument calibration, service and repair work. But, because the work comes in 'fits and starts', this would not be very cost-effective.

A much more cost-effective solution is to contract the work out to an outside supplier with the necessary ISO9001 and UKAS approvals, such as Denca Controls.

Benefits

The benefits which Guinness Packaging reap from contracting-out the service and traceable calibration of their site instrumentation are as follows:

  • It is much more cost-effective than manning-up for the work internally.
  • Production staff can concentrate on production and not worry about instrument calibration and maintenance.
  • The required calibration work is always carried out to schedule, whereas internal staff may be tempted to delay this work if other more pressing priorities intervene.
  • The calibration and service work is always planned into scheduled downtime, so no production time is lost.
  • The company has the security of knowing that the traceable calibration work is always carried out to the required standard by the supplier - his company's continued survival depends upon it!
  • The repair work is carried out without fail on a 24 hour call-out basis.

Technical

In accordance with ISO 9001 accreditation, all calibration equipment utilised by Denca Controls is certified by the UKAS calibration authority.
